After taking her art portfolio over to Bob Barrett and receiving an invitation to study with his department, Samantha decided to study Illustration at Brigham Young University under Christopher Thornock, Robert Barrett, and Bethanne Andersen. “I did Illustration not because I intended to do illustration— quite the contrary, actually; I hate being told what to paint. I did it because the program taught me how to draw. Much of our future and our past is kept hidden from us. While at first this may be disappointing, our blindness helps us to develop faith in God. We must trust that the Lord knows who we are and what we need to experience. When I am discouraged by unforeseen turns in the road, I can remember that while I may not fully understand now, God knows and in time will reveal His purposes to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis scripture garnered more meaning for me when I struggled with diminished eyesight due to an autoimmune disease. I literally saw through a glass darkly with the possibility that I would lose my sight completely. All I could do was the best I could with the sight I had. I chose to exercise faith in Christ, who promises us peace now and clarity someday.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis painting began with a stained glass motif, hearkening back to cathedrals and their use of colored windows to beautify and instruct. Stained glass may indeed be magnificent, but illuminate a space it does not. Hence it was perfect as the background for seeing “through a glass darkly.” Next I put a little devil on the left enticing Priscilla (she named herself as I developed her) to listen to him and a little angel on the right entreating Priscilla to listen to him. Priscilla in her dark glasses pauses in a moment of indecision. It appears that she will pay heed to the angel. I dressed Priscilla in this rather dark poncho to illustrate how difficult it is to understand who we truly are in our mortal experience. We get a glimpse of the flamboyant blossoming of her character, but it’s mostly hidden. I added a suggestion of a halo around Priscilla to remind us how this process of choosing to follow the light we receive can eventually make us holy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eInitially I had the angel and the demon on opposite sides. I thought the angel should be on Priscilla’s right and the devil on her left. It just wasn’t working, though. When I moved the angel to the objective right of the painting, rather than the subjective right in relation to the individual, somehow the painting came together. I came to the realization that they should be switched because it more clear to the outside observer which choice is right than for the person in the thick of it.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"HavenLight Go","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis painting is about letting go of unnecessary burdens and removing conflict from our lives. The idea for this painting, however, actually started from a place of despair. The past couple of years I had felt that my day-to-day existence had been colored largely by the decisions of those in power more than it ever had been before. I was tired of pointless mandates ruining my quality of life and the frequent situations that required herculean patience. I disliked how pride and power were winning over common sense and decency. I despaired over the prevalence of evil and the persecution of goodness. I felt trapped. I felt powerless. I felt used and taken advantage of. And confusion! There was no end to confusion. In response I sketched out an idea of a forest scene with birds all locked up in cages with a woman in the center sadly unable to free them. Here were all these obligations and burdens and expectations placed upon me and I unable to do anything about them. The more I thought about this idea, however, the more I realized that this was a hopeless view of things and not entirely true. Yes, I could not undo others’ choices or change my circumstances in all the ways that I wished, but there was something I could do: I could let go. I could let go of the burden of maintaining my fury. My anger could do nothing to make my situation better; on the contrary, maintaining my indignation was only adding to my woes. I decided, therefore, to change my outlook. I needed to focus on what I could change and let go of that which I couldn’t. I needed to not let outside pressures hold my mind captive. I empowered my character by having her release the birds in the cages. She could not control the actions of the birds, but she could remove her obligation to continue to harbor them and thereby find inner peace.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"HavenLight The past couple of years I had felt that my day-to-day existence had been colored largely by the decisions of those in power more than it ever had been before. I was tired of pointless mandates ruining my quality of life and the frequent situations that required herculean patience. I disliked how pride and power were winning over common sense and decency. I despaired over the prevalence of evil and the persecution of goodness. I felt trapped. I felt powerless. I felt used and taken advantage of. And confusion! There was no end to confusion. In response I sketched out an idea of a forest scene with birds all locked up in cages with a woman in the center sadly unable to free them. Here were all these obligations and burdens and expectations placed upon me and I unable to do anything about them. The more I thought about this idea, however, the more I realized that this was a hopeless view of things and not entirely true. Yes, I could not undo others’ choices or change my circumstances in all the ways that I wished, but there was something I could do: I could let go. I could let go of the burden of maintaining my fury. My anger could do nothing to make my situation better; on the contrary, maintaining my indignation was only adding to my woes. I decided, therefore, to change my outlook. I needed to focus on what I could change and let go of that which I couldn’t. I needed to not let outside pressures hold my mind captive. I empowered my character by having her release the birds in the cages. Around the edges we see fruits and flowers and, on the top and bottom, the merging together of these two traits. It's funny to me how each language cultivates their own unique turns of phrase and how the meanings can change over time. The history of the phrase, \"another feather in your cap,\" begins in the 17th century with a negative connotation; a feather in your cap was seen a sign of foolishness. By the 18th century (possibly due to the more widespread use of plumage on one's garb) this has turned into a positive phrase of praise. I incorporate both meanings of this idiom into my collection of little paintings. Each of these women is adding yet another achievement to their long lists of accolades. Is it vain? I suppose it can be. It doesn't have to be, though. We each in our own way improve and develop and grow and add, as it were, feathers to our caps.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eEach little painting's design is based on a different shape: triangle, oval, and rectangle, suggesting that each person's accomplishments are unique to them. The new feathers do not match the preexisting array of feathers. This says two things. Firstly it highlights the celebration we feel over each new achievement. Secondly it describes how foreign a new victory can feel. I myself have a sort of love\/hate relationship with praise and success. Naturally I work for and crave it, but I also feel a strange sense of alienation from the thing once it is achieved. Will each woman's feather eventually blend in with the others, or will it become a crowning centerpiece of her work? Forests are interesting to me. Growing up in Utah with very little firsthand experience of ‘real’ trees, I see them as magical, or even sacred, spaces. They appear in all the stories. Sometimes they represent oppressive, scary places where one gets lost. Sometimes they serve as resorts of refuge or solitude. And yet, the lengthy list of everything we could do in life is overwhelming. There is more to do than we could ever do. As we each attempt to navigate this list for ourselves, sometimes we offer each other confusing counsel on what is most important. It can be hard to say no when I am asked to do yet another thing. It can be difficult to make time for others when the dishes and laundry and weeds and carpet and car need attending to. I even allow myself to feel pressure from others to spend my time in certain ways. I feel pressure to keep working even when I’m exhausted and need a break. I feel pressure to attend a ward activity even when I have no interest in playing another game of chair soccer. Lately I’ve been working on being more intentional with my activities. I attempt to prioritize what is most important each day and let other things fall to the wayside as they may. Some days this means I spend almost 15 hours out of the house. Other days this means I focus entirely on home improvement. Living a balanced life does not mean that every day will contain equal amounts of every important activity. It may mean that some days—or even whole periods of our lives—are heavily weighted toward one or two things, while other worthy activities sit on the sidelines. If we strive to answer the demands of each particular day and take time at regular intervals to reevaluate whether each activity is still needful and at which cadence, we will be guided towards those things that are needful at each season of our lives.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIronically, while in the development stage of this painting, I had to rebalance my elements several times. At first my figure was too small. Then his stack of items was too tall. Next the plates have to be readjusted. Then I noticed that the orientation of the tulip in the border felt wrong. Finally, balancing the colors and values for the finished painting proved difficult. Finding balance is often a matter of trial and error. And yet, the lengthy list of everything we could do in life is overwhelming. There is more to do than we could ever do. As we each attempt to navigate this list for ourselves, sometimes we offer each other confusing counsel on what is most important. It can be hard to say no when I am asked to do yet another thing. It can be difficult to make time for others when the dishes and laundry and weeds and carpet and car need attending to. I even allow myself to feel pressure from others to spend my time in certain ways. I feel pressure to keep working even when I’m exhausted and need a break. I feel pressure to attend a ward activity even when I have no interest in playing another game of chair soccer. Lately I’ve been working on being more intentional with my activities. I attempt to prioritize what is most important each day and let other things fall to the wayside as they may. Some days this means I spend almost 15 hours out of the house. Other days this means I focus entirely on home improvement. Living a balanced life does not mean that every day will contain equal amounts of every important activity. It may mean that some days—or even whole periods of our lives—are heavily weighted toward one or two things, while other worthy activities sit on the sidelines. If we strive to answer the demands of each particular day and take time at regular intervals to reevaluate whether each activity is still needful and at which cadence, we will be guided towards those things that are needful at each season of our lives.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIronically, while in the development stage of this painting, I had to rebalance my elements several times. At first my figure was too small. Then his stack of items was too tall. Next the plates have to be readjusted. Then I noticed that the orientation of the tulip in the border felt wrong. Finally, balancing the colors and values for the finished painting proved difficult. Finding balance is often a matter of trial and error.
