“Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.”
- Psalms 51:2
In scriptural texts like this one, water and oil often symbolize purifi cation and sanctifi cation. I pondered this in relation to examples of service like Christ washing his disciples’ feet, the story of the Good Samaritan, the woman anointing Christ with oil, and the priestly washing and anointing of the Tabernacle in the Book of Exodus. In these examples, the use of water and oil provide both temporal and fi gurative cleansing and prepare individuals to draw closer to holiness.
